A Brief History of Phoenixville, PA

The area that makes up present-day Phoenixville was inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before the arrival of European settlers in the early 18th century. Its growth and prosperity was largely due to the local iron and steel industries. The community grew around the Phoenix Iron & Steel Company, which was opened in 1790 and went on to become one of the largest iron producers in the United States. Previously known as Manavon, Phoenixville was settled in 1732 and was incorporated as a borough in 1849.

Aside from supplying patented Phoenix columns and other material for the construction of the U.S. Capitol Building, Phoenixville was also the center of iron works and munitions production during the American Civil War. The town grew from the late 1800s and early 1900s, and local businesses and industries flourished.

The local economy suffered from the closing of the Phoenix Iron & Steel Company in 1987 and the decline of the iron and steel industries in the mid-20th century. But just like the mythical creature from which it gets its name, Phoenixville has experienced a resurgence in the last few decades. The revitalization of its historic downtown has ushered in a wave of new shops and restaurants. Today, it is a thriving suburb that has plenty to offer real estate buyers and investors alike.
